Álvaro Martín Sanz
I am Álvaro Martín Sanz, a professor in the Department of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the University of Valladolid. I earned my Ph.D. with honors and cum laude distinction at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where I wrote a thesis on memory and the representation of genocides in non-fiction cinema. Additionally, I hold a degree in Philosophy from the University of Salamanca and have five master's degrees and a university specialist title in various fields such as cinematography, humanities, philosophy, and the science of religions.
I have been a Culturex specialist for the Ministry of Culture at the Permanent Delegation of Spain to UNESCO, and I have conducted research stays at institutions such as the University of Buenos Aires, Sapienza University of Rome, and the Sorbonne in Paris. My research focuses on contemporary society, specifically on cultural studies that link cinema, literature, and philosophy, with a particular emphasis on documentary film and memory studies. Throughout my career, I have published more than thirty articles in academic journals such as Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies, Hispanic Research Journal, Con A de animación, Confluencia o Kamchatka.
As a filmmaker, I have written, directed, and produced several short films and documentaries that have been awarded and screened at festivals and competitions worldwide. In 2016, the University of Sheffield organized a retrospective of my filmography, and in 2022, the Espacio Seminci in my city, Valladolid, presented a selection of my works. In the literary field, I have published a novel and a poetry collection to date. I am also very passionate about photography; not only do I teach this art at the university, but I also develop various personal projects.
